What Is Music Theory?
At its core, music theory is the study of the fundamental principles and elements that shape music, including rhythm, melody, harmony, and composition. It provides a deep understanding of how music works, empowering us to create, analyse, and appreciate the art form with greater insight and proficiency. By investing your time and energies in music theory (either for yourself or for your child) you have taken an important step that helps build key life-long skills such as: music appreciation, cognitive development, deductive reasoning, maths and logic. Overall, studying music theory can deepen your understanding and appreciation of music, enhance your creativity, and improve your performance as a musician, your creativity as a composer and your knowledge and enjoyment as a listener.

Learn the Language of Music
Just as with any other language, music has its own vocabulary and grammar. By studying music theory, you can learn to read, write, and speak the language of music fluently. This can help you communicate more effectively with other musicians, understand musical concepts more deeply, and express yourself more clearly through music.
In Lessons
After a lesson, it is best to try and apply what was discussed as soon as possible to ensure that you retain what we looked at. After this, come back and see what you can recall, if there were new parts that took more time to figure out or if it was an easy transfer of knowledge. Afterwards, you can go back and check that your new reference material is correct. By going through this process you will reinforce the principles covered in our lessons and maximise your learning and retention. Soon, you won't require the reference materials as you will be able to recall even complex formulas and answers by memory and identify what you are looking at by sight!
